Taking upon the name of Jesus Christ

Have you ever wondered what your name means. Why did your parent spend time deciding what to name you?

Does your name have a special meaning?

In Genesis 17:1-8 we learn that the Lord changed Abram's name to Abraham. "Abram" means exalted father and "Abraham" means father of a multitude.

This change served as an additional testimony of the Lord's promise to Abraham. He told Abraham that he would be the father of nations.

Today the Lord does not change our given names. Instead through baptism we take upon us the name of Jesus Christ. For this reason we are known as "Christians" or "Saints." A saint is a purified follower of Christ.

During sacrament we receive the name of the Lord (Doctrine and Covenants 20:77, 79).

We discussed making a mental checklist before taking the sacrament to decide if we are worthy enough to partake of the sacrament. You can decide what is on this list.

We discussed five desires you may have and Abraham's desire. He desired to be righteous.

Compare your desires to Abrahams.

We discussed what may it difficult for Abraham.

Please make sure to read your scriptures for tomorrow.

Noah and the Flood

What would you think if somebody ran into your classroom and said there will be a natural disaster next week?

Would you believe them?

What would need to happen in order for you to believe him/her?

Some of you said you would think the person was crazy, you probably would not believe them and you would like proof.

This relates to Noah's story. He knew there would be a flood and warned everyone.

People thought he was crazy and did not listen to him. They did not have faith in his word. They had grown so distant from the Lord and had become wicked.

The Lord needed to cleanse the earth of this wickedness so that spirits in the spirit world would have a chance to come to earth and lead righteous lives.

The Lord protected Noah and his family b/c of his obedience.

We are currently living in the last days. The second coming is near.

We know the Lord has said he will not cause destruction by water but rather by fire.

Several of you expressed concern and fear.

We do not need to be worry or be afraid. If we do what the Lord has asked us to do and heed to the promptings of the prophets we will be protected like Noah and his family.

Genesis 5 Moses 6-7

Today we discussed the importance of journal writing. "Old" people are not the only ones who do it.

There are no rules to journal writing. You mainly want to discuss your feelings and thoughts so that your grand children and future generations can get to know you and learn from you.

We are fortunate to have written records from our ancestors. It helps us overcome personal struggles that we may be having. It helps us know the truth, gain a testimony and understand ordinances.

It's also important to learn about our ancestors so that we have a better understanding of our family history but more importantly so that we can do temple work for them.

We learned about Enoch and discussed the reasons why the Lord calls prophets.

We spoke about the importance of having prophets.

Please read Genesis 6-10 for tomorrow.

Adam and Eve and their family

On Thursday we learned more about Adam and Eve and their two sons, Cain and Abel.

We discussed the offerings that Cain and Abel gave to the Lord.

We discussed that Cain felt jealous of Abel b/c the Lord was pleased with Abel's offering and not Cain's.

We discussed the reasons why the Lord must have felt displeased with Cain's offerings. The Lord might have been displeased with his attitude.

We likened this to our life. How do we offer service or make offerings?? Are we complaining and murmuring??

We discussed Cain killing Abel. We read in Moses that Satan influenced Cain to do this (this fact is missing in the Old Testament).

What can we do to prevent Satan from influencing our lives?

Please read Genesis 5-10 Moses 6-8 for this week.

The Fall

Today we reviewed Genesis 3 Moses 4.

We reviewed the consequences that came after Eve partook of the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
We discussed why the fall was necessary.

We discussed why freedom is not really free.

We discussed "Free Agency".

Why is our agency not free??

The Creation

Today we discussed the creation.

God created everything. His creations are so immense it is beyond our comprehension.

The known Universe is 40,000,000,000 light years in diameter. A light-year is the distance light travels in one year at the speed of 186,000 per second which is about 5.9 trillion miles.

I point this out not just to spit out fact but to emphasize God's hand.

Some may get hung up on superficial such as how long creation took or how did it all begin. Focusing on this can distract us from what is important. (reasons why God created all this).

Our existence is not an accident. We have a purpose.

Please make sure to read Genesis 3 and Moses 4

Abraham 3 and Moses 1

Today we were able to get to know each other.

Who are we? Why are we here?

We are from Santo Domingo, Richmond Virginia, Mexico, Peru, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Italy, and Indonesia.

We are bothers and sisters.

We love alternate type of music, hip hop, heavy metal, and dead metal.

We are members of the church.

Mainly, WE are SONS and DAUGHTERS of our Heavenly Father and b/c of this we have great worth.

We learned that Abraham had been chosen to come to earth just like we have been chosen to come to earth during this time period.

Knowing this also allows us to see our worth. We were and still are special spirits in our pre mortal lives.

How does this make you feel?
